Artist Profile_Nobuyuki Furuya was born in 1984 as the third son of the late Michio Furuya, a representative Shigaraki ceramic artist. Partly because of the environment in which he grew up, he entered Kyoto Saga University of Arts and began studying ceramics. Furuya's father, Michio, who passed away in the summer when Furuya was 17 years old, wrote the book "Anagama - Construction and Firing -" which summarises episodes and research on anagama. There must have been some influence that he took about two years to visit kilns all over the country by bicycle. After graduating from university, Furuya embarked on a journey to visit pottery sites across the country. He found a different fascination in the work of Mr. Takashi Nakazato and his kick potter's wheel at Ryuta Kiln in Karatsu. A year after returning from his trip, Furuya immediately became an assistant to Mr. Nakazato, who was staying in his hometown of Shigaraki. Mr. Nakazato often worked in places other than Karatsu like in the United States and the next year Denmark. Noriyuki said not only technical aspect such as the kicking wheel but also the life such as cooking and eating would affect his works of pottery, therefore he continued to learn a lot from Takashi. In 2009 he made ceramics at Hananoki kiln in Toki City, Gifu and in 2015 he was received an invitation as a guest artist to the Anderson Ranch Center in the United States and gave lecture on Japanese production methods to local ceramic artists.
