Artist Profile_Born in 1955 Yuriko Morioka works with her husband, Shigeyoshi Morioka, at the foot of Mt. Koya in the northeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture. She started creating her signature Hakuji after making Yakishime and earthenware. She visited the kiln sites of South Korea to learn the local techniques. Her work represents long and deep history with her respect to the Joseon Dynasty of the nation. There is a soft appearance using a technique called ikigake, in which the base is glazed without being fired unglazed. It is said that by applying the glaze to the surface of the porcelain, there are minute holes that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The charm and beauty of her work expresses a feeling of “motherhood”.
